Fostering of Spanish patent and utility model applications in Spain and abroad

On April 1, 2025, the provisions for the granting of subsidies for the promotion of Spanish and foreign patent and utility model applications were published in the Official State Gazette.

The aim is to promote the international protection of technology through patents in order to improve the competitiveness of companies, especially small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

The deadline for submitting applications starts on April 2 and ends on May 2, 2025, inclusive. The processing of the subsidies must be carried out entirely electronically with the SPTO.

In summary, applications for patents and/or utility models that are eligible for these subsidies must have been filed abroad claiming priority from a patent application, utility model, PCT international application or European patent application filed with the SPTO. The activities eligible for the subsidy are those for which expenses have been incurred from January 1, 2024 to December 31, 2024

Likewise, Spanish patent applications and utility models that do not claim any priority, have been published during the years 2022, 2023 and 2024 and have not received a grant in previous calls will be eligible for a grant. It is essential that the fees for the activities covered by the grant have been paid.
