María Romero Alonso

María earned her law degree from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid in 2017 and later completed a Master’s Degree for Admission to the Legal Profession at CUNEF, where she specialized in tax law. After passing the bar admission exam, her first professional experience made her realize that she did not want to pursue a career in tax law. She therefore decided to redirect her career and completed the Master’s Degree in Intellectual Property, Industrial Property, and New Technologies at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, graduating in 2021.

Having spent part of her childhood in Brussels and completed an exchange at Sorbonne University in Paris, María knew that her international experience was not over—in fact, it had only just begun. She joined the European Patent Office’s Young Professional Programme in Munich, which gave her the opportunity to live in Germany for four years, a period she considers one of the best chapters of her life.

During that time, she had the opportunity to work in different departments, dealing with matters as interesting as the implementation of the Unitary Patent, EPO validation agreements with third countries, and legal advice on representation before the EPO. While at the EPO, she also completed a three-month secondment at the Dutch Patent Office (RVO) in The Hague.

Looking to settle down and return home, María joined Balder IP in Madrid in 2025, where she has begun developing her practice as an attorney in intellectual property litigation. Although she feels particularly at home in the patent field, she is also taking the opportunity to train in trademarks while providing legal advice on intellectual property matters.

In her free time, María loves skiing, a sport she learned while living in Germany, cooking and trying all kinds of recipes, as well as any plan that involves being close to family and friends.
