2026 OEPM Subsidies Now Open for Patent and Utility Model Applications

On March 24, 2026, the provisions governing the granting of subsidies to promote Spanish and foreign patent and utility model applications were published in the Spanish Official Gazette (Boletín Oficial del Estado).

These measures are intended to encourage the international protection of technology through patents, with the aim of enhancing business competitiveness, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

The application period opened on March 25 and will close on April 24, 2026, inclusive. Applications for these subsidies must be submitted entirely by electronic means before the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office (OEPM).

In summary, the patent and/or utility model applications eligible for these subsidies must have been filed abroad, claiming priority from a Spanish patent application, utility model application, international (PCT) application, or European patent application filed with the OEPM. Eligible activities are those for which the corresponding expenses were incurred between January 1, 2025, and December 31, 2025.

Likewise, Spanish patent and utility model applications that do not claim any priority may also qualify, provided they were published in 2023, 2024, or 2025 and have not received funding in previous calls. It is essential that the relevant official fees associated with the subsidized activities have been effectively paid.
